Playstation Plus: Full Details

I’ll be giving my thoughts on PSN Plus later on, but I can tell you that indeed I will be getting this new service from Sony when it launches in the US and Europe on June 29th. Because the internet seems to go nuts and lose sight of what’s really going on, I will have to point out that all the remaining services you enjoy on your Playstation 3 and PSP will continue to be free. So online gaming, access to the Playstation Store, firmware updates etc. will all continue to be free. So what does Playstation Plus give you? Lots of content. Lots and lots of content. So what are these?

  • Games
  • Discounts
  • Exclusive items on PlayStation Store
  • Full Game Trial
  • Automatic Downloads

Games:
Each month as a Playstation Plus member, you will receive 4 games as part of your package. That means 1 PSN game, 2 Mini Games (both playable on the PSP and PS3) as well as a PS One Classic game (again, usually playable on both the PS3 and PSP). Keep note that the list changes every month and once the month changes, you wont have access to downloading what was offered.

Themes & Avatars:
Each month, you will also get 2 dynamic themes and 2 premium avatars to download and own. Also, you will get exclusive content that’s only available to Playstation Plus members.

Discounts:
Each month, you will also be given discounts on all sorts of Playstation Store content ranging from 20%-50%. These will also be on top of any discount available. So if there is a $9.99 game and it has a week special of $4.99, you can still get the discount on top of that.

Beta & Demo:
Again, you will also be able to download exclusive demos and gain access to Betass before the public has access to them. So if you want to get into the “Socom 4” or “Killzone 3” beta, I have a feeling this is going to be a good avenue in.

Game Trials:
Each month, you can download 2 full game trials and try them for a period of time. If you like that game, you can then purchase it and unlock the full game. The thing to note is that the entire game will be downloaded with Trophy access and all. If you gain any Trophies (even if you decide to delete the trial and not buy the full game), they will still be in your stats. Also, if you turn around and buy the game, then you will start off from where you left off in your trial.

Automatic Download: (from Sony’s own mouth)
Members will be able to set their PS3 to wake up from standby at any time of the day or night, download and install any game updates for the games you have been playing and we will also send you new game demos that will be ready and waiting for you to play when you next use your PS3. System software updates will also download automatically (manual install still required) and then the PS3 will turn itself off again.

Game updates and demos will also automatically install and the next time you turn on your PS3 you will see a brief on screen message letting you know what has been downloaded and updated.
