Box Office: Narnia and The Tourist Fail to Draw Big Attendance

Over the weekend, new release The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Tourist failed to draw big numbers from the audience while the box office itself was down nearly five percent from the year prior when Disney’s The Princess and the Frog lead. Still audiences had plenty of holdover movies to choose from like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Tangled, and Unstoppable.

Now in its third and what will probably be final chapter, after continuing to perform worse then it’s predecessor, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was only able to draw in an estimated $24.5 million on approximately 6,500 screens at 3,555 locations (3D showings at 1,989 venues accounted for 54 percent of business). This puts the 3rd film in third place, compared to the first Narnia film which drew in $65.6 million its first weekend and the second film which grabbed $55 million though that film itself captured only half off the first films total gross. Now with a $155 million budget and such a poor opening, it is unlikely that the series will move on from here. Part of it is to blame  onpoor marketing which didn’t really draw upon the franchise and its plot, instead focusing on just coming to Narnia, giving little reason for viewers, outside of fans of the books and series to want to check it out.

On the other hand, though not pulling in the draw Sony Pictures would have liked with both Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie starring, the $100 million action heist film The Tourist pulled in a acceptable $17 million on around 3,400 screens at 2,756 locations. Adult films like this tend to have longer legs than sometimes other big spectacle films, though I doubt the movie will cross the $100 million in the States but will indeed make more than that once international figures are calculated in.

On the other hand, holdover films continued to sit well with audiences, putting Disney’s Tangled in 3rd place with 14.6 million, down only 33% from the week prior. This puts the film’s current total at around $115 million ($192 if you count international) which is already ahead of last year’s Disney release, The Princess and the Frog, which finished with $104 million ($267 with international).

In fourth place and fourth week out came Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 with $8.5 million, hitting $257.7 million in 24 days. In its 7th showing, the film is poised to surpass Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ $261 million gross and become the fifth highest grossing in the series, though it is doubtful the film will pass Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire which was released in 2005 with $290 million.

Another great holdover, now out for 31 days, is Unstoppable, starring Chris Pine and Denzel Washington. The $100 million film opened with a respectable, though nothing to rave about $22 million and now has added another $3.7 million, helping the film cross $74 million ($125 with international gross). Once you consider future release of the film via DVD, Blu-ray, downloads and rentals, the film will have easily been worth the production budget.
