Sony Electronics has purchased the British firm Hawk-Eye for an undisclosed sum. The company provides ball-tracking technology used in tennis and cricket. FIFA is said to be considering using such technology in the future to rule on goal-line decisions. Sony has been a long time sponsor of FIFA and the World Cup.
Paul Hawkins, inventor of Hawk-Eye, said Monday the takeover by Sony would create “immense opportunities for the sports industry.”
