Sony announced Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita at their Gamescom conference earlier today.
Developed by Nihilistic, developers of the critically acclaimed Vampire: The Masquerade, Burning Skies acts as a prequel to the events of Resistance 2. Burning Skies casts players as Tom Reilly, a New York Firefighter caught in the midst of the Chimeran invasion of the United States. Unlike the PSP’s Resistance Retribution, Burning Skies ditches the third-person view in favor of the traditional first-person view that the Resistance franchise began with. Since the Vita has dual analog sticks, it will be much easier to play the game with traditional console FPS controls. Nihilstic also mentioned that they have plans to use the touch screens for added functionality including melee attacks and touch-specific secondary fire attacks.
Finally, Nihilistic detailed the new first-person cover system for Burning Skies. It seems the developer learned much from the Killzone franchise and added their own cover system (this time by crouching and automatically locking them to cover). That, in conjunction with the Vita’s SIXAXIS functionality adds more depth in movement and control to the already impressive looking shooter.
There are no release date details as of yet. Keep checking back for more information.
