The successor of the popular NEX-5 is finally here and as expected, is called the NEX-5N. This midrange and mirrorless camera from Sony might seem identical to the NEX-5, but is capable of offering a heck of a lot more and will probably be more than enough of a camera for those who are not willing to venture into the NEX-7 territory. First, let’s get the specs out of the way.
- Touch-screen display
- Electronic First Curtain shutter
- Revised 16.1MP CMOS sensor
- 1080p 60p HD movies in AVCHD format (MP4 format supported as well though in a lower resolution)
- 10fps continuous shooting mode (at full resolution)
- ISO 100-25600
- Auto ISO limit of 3200
- In-camera CA, vignetting and distortion correction
- Creative Control results-orientated user interface
- Picture Effects processing options
- New accessory attachment
After the jump, further details, including the price and pictures.
As you can see, the NEX-5N is a proper evolution from the NEX-5. Though it might not be a drastic shift to warrant a swap from the NEX-5 to the NEX-5N, the higher FPS rate, greater ISO sensitivity, accessory attachment slot, and addition of touchscreen are all highly welcomed features. I have to say that on a personal note, this gives me 9/10 that I want, with GPS being the only lacking feature.
Speaking of accessories, with the new accessory attachment, you can add traditional add-ons like flash and a microphone. However, the real magic takes place when you add the optional XGA OLED electronic viewfinder ($350), which is not compatible with previous models. Other attachments include the LA-EA2 module ($399) which allows you to use A-mount lenses on the NEX-5N without losing any functionality. Speaking of price, the NEX-5N will be available in September in black and silver with an 18-55mm kit zoom lens (model SEL1855) for about $700 and as a body-only for about $600.
