Sony’s ever growing line of Android smartphones for the US and Europe which include the Xperia ion, Xperia S, Xperia P, and Xperia U all have one thing in common, and that’s the lack of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest from the internet search giant Google. But before fans get their pitch forks out and head to Sony’s HQ, it should be noted that ICS will be pushed to all mentioned devices in the near future. So it’s a bit of a surprise to hear that Sony has announced a new smartphone, the Sony Xperia neo L (MT25i) for China and it will be rocking Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich from day one in white or black. If the name sound familiar, that’s because Sony also produced the Xperia neo under the Sony Ericsson moniker, though in this case, it’s more of a recycling of the name than a true predecessor.
The Sony Xperia neo (and yes we love how Sony likes to mix up device names with some of them randomly being lowercase like Xperia ion while Xperia PLAY is in full caps) breaks the design structure in the current line of Xperia phones and instead opts for more curves. Those with a keen eye will be able to spot the phones similarities to the Xperia PLAY and in fact, the 120.0 x 61.0 x 12.8 mm dimensions place the phone in an identical shell, minus the sliding out keyboard. It wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine that Sony had a lot of parts sitting around and decided to recycle old parts for the Chinese market which doesn’t tend to demand the most high end features. Speaking of recycled parts, despite it being a 2012 smartphone with Android 4.0, many of the internal parts are in fact from Sony’s 2011 phones. The Sony Xperia neo L specs include:
- Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich
- 1GHz single-core Snapdragon MSM8255 processor
- Adreno 205 graphics
- 512MB RAM
- 4-inch mutli-touch display (480 x 854)

We’ll have more to report as soon as we uncover additional information like price and availability. Don’t expect this to trickle in the United States unless Sony want’s a true budget phone.
