If the wait between Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man which hits theaters on July 3 is longer than you would have liked, then we have some good news for you. Sony Pictures has just hired Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the duo behind blockbusters like Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible to write the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. More details, after the jump.
Kurtzman and Orci who are also involved with some of TV’s biggest and best shows like Hawaii Five-0 and Fringe are currently on set of Star Trek 2, their latest writing assignment with J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof. After this, the duo will be tasked with writing the sequel which has already been drafted by James Vanderbilt who wrote The Amazing Spider-Man. The sequel is expected to go into production the first quarter of 2013 with a May 2nd, 2014 release date which will once again star Andrew Garfield. When asked about their latest gig, the duo responded:
We grew up as huge Spider-Man fans so, to us, the opportunity to work on this film is akin to being handed the Holy Grail. We love the direction Sony and the filmmakers are taking the Peter Parker/Spider-Man mythology and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this legendary franchise.
Spider-Man producer, Matt Tolmach has this to say:
Alex and Bob have a unique ability to write great character and spectacular action that makes them pitch perfect for Spider-Man. They’ve been friends of ours for a long time and they have an exciting take on the franchise – we’re thrilled to have them join the Spider-Man family.
Seeing how I’m a huge Transformers and Star Trek fan and have enjoyed every Mission: Impossible outing, I’m quite happy about the announcement. Given the duos track record for creating large set pieces and offering witty humor, something that many Spider-Man fans have longed for to see on the big screen, Kurtzman and Orci presence is certainly a welcome tot he beloved franchise and character.
