Not wanting to wait till CES 2013, Sony announced and released the Bravia XBR-84X900, their first consumer 4K television. A first of its kind for Sony, the 84-inch mammoth television is called an Ultra HD TV, boasting 4 times the resolution of traditional HD sets. Think iPhone and iPad Retina display, compared to other smartphones out there. As is the case with any new technology, let alone one that is 84-inches, the 84X900 comes with a hefty price tag of $24,999, targeted at those that money is not taken into consideration for their purchasing habits. This of course begs the question of adoption. How can Sony hope to drive the price of this product down and expand its market share if its too early for a price reduction? The answer seems to be a simple one and one that Sony did, which is to offer the television in a 55-inch and 65-inch model as well. Lets talk details, after the jump.
One of the big announcements for Sony during CES 2013 was the 4K Bravia XBR-55X900A and XBR-65X900A which is aimed at bringing a more affordable price range to their 4K line. While the jump in resolution is welcomed in any screen size, higher pixel counts tend to really lend themselves to a spectacle when television sets are larger, hence Sony’s 4K Bravia line only comprising of an 84-inch, 65-inch, and 55-inch. However, don’t be too surprised that in years to come, as the technology continues to improve and prices have dropped, that a 4K set becomes the defecto standard for any screen size, much like HD is now.
Sony has claimed a Spring time frame for shipment of the 55-inch, and 65-inch set but failed to go into specific details like price and specs. Still, there is a few facts that we can walk away with like the televisions 4K resolution which by definition has to be 3,840 x 2,160. Other touted features include:
- Immersive 4K Ultra HD picture quality with Edge LED backlight
- 4K X-Reality PRO picture engine and Motionflow™ XR 960
- Triluminous display for breathtaking color clarity and detail
- Passive 3D, with 4 pairs of glasses included
- Built-in Wi-Fi for streaming connectivity, including Sony Entertainment Network™
- Screen Mirroring via Wi-Fi, NFC remote included
- MHL-ready (ready for mirroring second screens)
- USB playback
Another small but welcome gesture from Sony is the inclusion of four pairs of 3D glasses which will be included in each model, no matter the size. As expected with any modern television, Sony will be providing a host of different video playback options via built in apps like YouTube and Netflix. Other options include USB playback which allows for access of media content to the TV from a flash drives and USB hard drives. Those looking for a 21st century solution should also note the series build in wireless (up to N), gigabit ethernet port, DLNA, and NFC with One-Touch which all allow for streaming of content form your computer and or mobile device. As we near the televisions launch date, we’ll be sure to report on further details that we’ll surely hear about.
Updated:
Thanks to our reader Matt who’s brought it to our attention that the X900A series in fact ships with a 10/100 ethernet port and not gigabit as we’d reported earlier.
