“Playroom” to Come Pre-Installed on PlayStation 4

In an interesting move, Sony confirmed today that the tech demo “The Playroom” will come pre-installed on every PlayStation 4 at launch. “The Playroom” makes use of the PlayStation 4 camera–which is not included with the console–and shows off a number of the device’s features, including augmented reality tracking, smartphone and tablet integration, and the DualShock 4’s motion and touchpad capabilities.

PlayStation UK’s official video, posted above, highlights a few of the demo’s features. In “The Playroom” you can interact with a virtual robot, Asobi, that you ‘summon’ from your DualShock 4; with two players, you can create a VR game of Pong; and if you enjoy playing god, you can have fun with the AR Bots that are living inside your controller by shaking the DualShock, covering the light bar to shroud them in darkness, or flicking them into the ‘real world’ with the touchpad. PlayStation App integration on your Vita, tablet, or smartphone is also included, allowing you to draw an object on the app and let your AR Bots play with it.

“The Playroom” seems like a genuinely intuitive and fun way to show off the aspects of the PlayStation 4’s motion capabilities, though with the PlayStation 4 camera now confirmed as a separate add-on, it may be somewhat limited in its user base.
