Despite having yet to utilize the ecosystem in a proper way, Sony has something that no other company does. Sony as an entity which has other divisions which include Sony Pictures, Sony/BMG, and PlayStation is capable of making electronics, movies/music, and video games. That really is the holy trinity, especially when you consider the affinity between Hollywood and the video game industry. While we’ve recognized this for years, it seems like Sony might actually be taking this seriously for the first time with their planned Gran Turismo movie.
For those not familiar, Gran Turismo is the best selling PlayStation exclusive franchise by Yamauchi, a former racecar driver. Yamauchi would eventually leave the racing world behind and create Polyphony Digital, the company behind the series thats sold over 77 million copies world wide. To make things convenient, PlayStation owns Polyphony Digital which in turn is owned by Sony which owns a movie studio called Sony Pictures. With that out of the way, lets talk about the film itself.
If you’ve ever play Gran Turismo, you’ll know that there is no plot. The game is purely a driving simulator unlike the Need For Speed or Driver franchises which Hollywood is also trying to adapt. While this might make it an odd choice for a franchise to adapt, it might actually be the perfect choice. One of the problem many gamers have had is that their franchise never gets adapted properly to the big screen. The characters are different, the settings have changed, and the plot has been tweaked. Gran Turismo has none of that. In fact, Gran Turismo is based off of real life cars and tracks so if anything, it would be the game that’s messing with what actually exists.
This means creators will have an open campus to work with. Think how the Fast and Furious franchise has matured over the years with cars as a central part of each tale. Another example is the up coming Ron Howard film Rush, starring Chris Hemsworth which is set in the world of Formula 1 racing.
To make this happen, Sony Pictures has put producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, the team behind Sam Taylor-Johnson’s popular Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation. Sony is also bringing a few other members of Hollywood onboard like Elizabeth Cantillon, DeVon Franklin, and Hannah Minghella. Beyond that, there is very little information to go off from.
No talent, including writer, director, or stars have been placed on the project which makes sense as the planned film is still in the very early stages of development. Sony Pictures has also been trying to get an Uncharted film off the ground though they’ve so far had little success.

Do you think Gran Turismo can be adapted to a worth film?
