With new details emerging every week about a particular fruit-flavored mobile OS due out in September, anticipation is also growing for the next iteration of Android, dubbed “Key Lime Pie”. Whether or not it will be branded version 4.5 or 5.0 remains to be seen, but Google is definitely hard at work fine-tuning the next phase of the Android operating system. TechRadar even reports that the new Android flavored dessert may be served up with an unnamed Sony smartphone. The latest news certainly has this writer’s tech taste buds watering…
After the break, check out the newest developments surrounding Key Lime Pie, and for you Android aficionados out there, weigh in on what you are hoping to see in the newest version of Google’s mobile OS.
So what can we expect from Key Lime Pie? It seems that the folks out of Mountain View are trying to reach a wider audience with this release, as the WSJ reports:
As part of the release of the next Android version—known internally as “K release” and referred to by industry observers as “Key Lime Pie”—Google will give manufacturers such as Samsung greater freedom to use Android in devices other than smartphones and tablets, such as appliances and wearable devices, said people familiar with the matter.
So does this mean that there will be refrigerators, microwaves, or home heating/cooling systems running Android? What would Android look like in a new 60″ Sony LED T.V. with internet capability? If Google plays this right, Android has the ability to become almost ubiquitous – imagine all of your household devices having complete compatibility and the same OS. From a user standpoint, this is obviously a development to watch: imagine the ease of learning one OS rather than a proprietary OS for each different type of device in your home! Key Lime Pie is also rumored to run on lower-end phones as well, so users with older devices may be able to upgrade to the newest version of Android.
Of course, nothing official has been announced, although there is always the good-natured trolling from Google. With the latest version of iOS on the horizon however, don’t be surprised if you get to taste a delicious piece of Key Lime Pie sooner rather than later.
UPDATE (3 September 2013): Today, Google revealed that the new Android version will be called KitKat, and they are even teaming up with the candy maker to win a Nexus 7 or Google Play credit. This will also be version 4.4, and NOT 5.0 like some commentators thought (or hoped).

What are you looking forward to/hoping for in the next version of Android, or even a Key Lime Pie KitKat flavored Sony Xperia?
