Sony has just announced their FY 2013 Q2 earnings report and smartphones continue to be a bright spot for the company. While other divisions have been a bit of a mixed bag, smartphone sales are up 39.3% compared to a year ago. Despite a lackluster effort in the US, Sony Mobile has continued to push hard in Europe and Asia with the company releasing a steady fleet of smartphones like the Xperia Z and Z1 and phablets like the Xperia Z Ultra. Just last year, Sony Mobile was responsible for ¥300.4 (billion) while this year, the division brought in ¥418.6 (billion), making it the companies highest performing division by far.
Sony expects to sell 42 million smartphones for the physical year, compared to 33 million for the year prior. This shouldn’t be a hard goal for the company to achieve, having sold 9.6 million units last quarter and another 10 million this quarter. Sony has always said that their short term goal is to achieve the number three smartphone manufacture spot and these numbers are encouraging. However, the company has a long ways to go before it can achieve the numbers that rivals Apple and Samsung post. While the Sony Xperia Tablet Z has been a favorite among reviewers of Android tablets, Sony did not disclose sales of the unit or of its tablet efforts. We’ll have more analysis of Sony’s FY 2013 Q2 earnings report as we go through the numbers.
Discuss:
Do you think Sony mobile should continue to focus on Europe/Asia or is it time they turn their attention on the US as well? If so, would that be too many front for Sony to cover?
