The PlayStation 4 has only been on sale for a little more than two weeks, launching in 30 countries on November 29 after an extremely successful launch in the United States and Canada on November 15. More than a million consoles in North America in 24 hours was followed by the biggest launch in the history of UK video game consoles over the course of 48 hours. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment group CEO Andrew House announced via press release and on the PlayStation Blog that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold through to consumers globally.
According to House, the PS4 sold more than 700,000 units in the Europe, Australasia, and Latin American territories that saw the console this past weekend. In the release from Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. (SCEI), House was quoted saying “PS4 delivered the best launch in PlayStation history with the North American release and we’ve continued this incredibly successful start in Europe, Australasia and Latin America.” House reiterated Sony’s commitment to ensure available stock of the new system throughout the holiday season, while thanking those early adopters, saying “[w]e are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”
The PS4’s launch will continue throughout December worldwide, with South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Africa, India, and the United Arab Emirates all in line to receive stock of the system before year’s end. Sony expects to sell 3 million units of the PS4 by the end of 2013, and 5 million units by March 2014–a month after the system releases in Japan, the software company’s home. With early sales swelling, and more stock hopefully arriving for eager consumers, the PlayStation business looks to be in very good hands heading into the New Year.
