The path to an Uncharted film has been a long one with Sony Pictures looking at many well-known directors, like David O. Russell and Neil Burger. While Russell’s take was the furthest from the core Uncharted plot line, neither director ended up panning out for the film. In fact, even Naughty Dog, the famous developers behind the franchise, have tried to help make the movie happen, turning to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to pen the film but neither could come up with an original take.
Despite little presence, it seems that Sony Pictures has quietly continued its efforts to make the film happen and finally has an official director for the project.
The honor – or daunting task – of bringing Nathan Drake to the silver screen goes to Seth Gordon, who directed the video game documentary The King of Kong before changing gears with comedies like Identity Thief and Horrible Bosses. It’s believed that David Guggenheim (Safe House) is still set to pen the script though that could change with Gordon onboard. Sony Pictures is trying to get everything together for a late 2014 production, which would mean a late-2015 release date, though a mid-2016 release seems more likely.
While fans should always be cautious about a video game being adapted to film, it’s a good sign that Sony has met with so many different high profile directors, only to not move forward with the film. While green lighting a project like that could have been easy for Sony, it seems that the company wants a vision that’s true to the game.
