Sony has announced that PS4 sales have now shot passed 5.3 million units as of February 8th. This beats the company’s full year target before even bringing the glory home to Japan on February 22.
The console has officially launched in Europe, America, Canada, India and other select south-east Asian countries. With Sony’s latest update on the PS4s progress, it’s clear that launches to date have executed very well, with the goal of 5 million unit sales to the end of March already completed by Feb 8.
Regarding the competition, Microsoft reported that 3.9m Xbox One consoles were sold to retail stores by January 23rd. This leaves a three-week difference in the reporting of both companies sales figures but the PS4 is comfortably ahead, before anyone has even turned on the lights for the Japanese launch in four days time.
Sony was particularly happy about it’s US PS4 sales progress in January:
The impending PS4 Japanese launch on February 22 cannot be undervalued. With a sizable market of 127 million people, the company has a branding stronghold at home with the Sony name enjoying high prestige in consumer electronics. Sony has made comments in it’s financial results how the company ‘needs to do well at home if it is to succeed abroad‘. Having achieved its launch window sales target for the PS4 abroad already and with the competitor not planning to arrive until late in the year, the next major launch should feel like a comfortable win.
