More Layoffs Hit Sony First-Party Developers, Driveclub Director Leaves Evolution

In two separate reports from Videogamer website, more trouble has been reported at Sony Computer Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios, with major implications for the delayed PS4 social racer Driveclub. In their first report, Videogamer revealed that another round of layoffs have hit Sony Worldwide Studios, this time affecting three UK studios.

Driveclub and MotorStorm developer Evolution Studios, The Playroom and Project Morpheus tech demo “The Deep” creator Sony London, and Guerrilla Cambridge, who made last year’s PS Vita title Killzone: Mercenraryall were subject to a round of staff reductions. In a statement to Videogamer, Sony spokespersons explained that “there will be a focused restructure within London Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge Studio and Evolution Studio to ensure that the SCE WWS is in the best position to achieve their goals going forward.” The spokesperson also noted that Evolution’s development of Driveclub would not be affected by these layoffs.

Driveclub-Gamescom-Promo1-440x270Videogamer’s second report, however, may have more of an effect on the development of the next-gen racer. The same afternoon that layoffs were announced, Videogamer reported that Driveclub‘s game director Col Rodgers had left Evolution Studios in order to form an independent game studio. Rodgers reportedly left the studio on good terms with Sony, according to the report, and his departure was not related to this round of layoffs within Worldwide Studios. Driveclub was originally planned as a PS4 launch title, but was delayed just weeks before the console’s launch and is currently scheduled for a 2014 release, though neither Sony nor Evolution have given a time table for when it will see store shelves.

The layoffs at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe come at the end of a tumultuous month for the PlayStation division, with layoffs at Santa Monica Studios and well-known creative forces and executives leaving the company.
