Sony Xperia Z2 to Launch in US With No Carrier Support

Sony has officially confirmed that the highly coveted Xperia Z2 with 4K video recording will be launching in the US come this summer. While no exact time frame was given, Sony was keen on using “several months” in their statement, leading us to believe that it’s more likely a July and beyond timeframe and not June for their Android smartphone.

The Sony Xperia Z2 was already released in most of Asia during March and April and is expected to be released in May in Canada. So let’s talk carrier support.

According to Sony, talks are still ongoing with carriers about the Xperia Z2. This means that when Sony does launch the Z2 in the US, that availability will be limited to Sony’s online store and last few remaining retail outlets. Lack of carrier support also means that the phone will only be available in an unlocked version. That’s great news for those looking to not be tied to a contract, but bad news for your wallet as it likely means the Xperia Z2 will be priced upwards of $700.

Currently, T-Mobile is the only carrier Sony has been able to partner with to offer the Xperia Z1s. Sony has also indicated that a release for the Xperia Compact Z1 in the US remains unlikely as well.

Are you interested in unlocked smartphones from Sony or does the lack of carrier partnership mean that you’ll be skipping the Xperia Z2?
