If you’ve been eyeing yourself a phablet because you can’t decide if you want a smartphone or a tablet then listen up. As of today, you can get the massive 6.4-inch Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition for $200 less. For those playing at home, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra offers a 6.4-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) Triluminos display on a Qualcomm 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, and 4G LTE connectivity. Other noteworthy specs from this mega phone, which dwarfs the Samsung Galaxy Note series, include an 8-megapixel Exmor RS sensor which lacks flash and a front-facing 2-megapixel camera. What made the Google Play Edition of the Xperia Z Ultra different than Sony’s own version was the bump to Android 4.4 Kitkat and a lack of the bundled software from Sony which were in place, swapped out for software from Google.
With the $200 price cut, you can now get the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition (not a mouthful at all) for $449, down $200 from when it normally launched. To further sweeten the deal, Google is also throwing in free ground shipping. All indications point towards this being the new MSRP from Google and not a limited time sale. While neither Google nor Sony have commented on the matter, the price cut is likely due to low sales. With Sony marketing being next to nonexistent, it’s likely that the phone, which already has a smaller appeal due to its massive screen size, was not even known to those who do seek out larger-display smartphones.
While it’s a shame that Sony continues to struggle with sales of some fantastic products that surely would find a home if they were offered by a certain company (Samsung), this means that if you’ve been in the market for such a device, now is the time to act and save some money. Sony most recently announced that their next flagship Android smartphone, the Xpeira Z2 would come to the US this summer, months after other territories, with no carrier support.

Do you think the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is failing to move due to its massive screen size or due to lack of marketing from Sony?
