A curious image (seen above) has been circulating the past 24 hours with Sony’s flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z2, sporting a logo from Verizon. Till this day, Sony has had a less than meaningful presence in the US and only recently has the company partnered with T-Mobile to offer their smartphones through a carrier. A deal with Verizon, the nations largest carrier, would go a long way for Sony and help bring attention to their smartphone that they cannot get in another other way. The image, which was accidentally posted by none other than Sony, seems to hint at just that but according to Sony, it’s just a mock-up of what the future could bring. Their statement:
A mock-up image was mistakenly posted to the Sony Mobile Google+ page. The image has since been removed and we apologize for any confusion this may have caused. For our U.S. customers eager to find out more information about the availability of Xperia Z2, we are excited to share that the device will be coming to the U.S. unlocked this summer.
While companies tend to create internal mock-ups and situations to test markets and products, it’s hard to believe why that information would be passed down to the social media/marketing division so we have to believe that the product is a real one. Still, just because a product is real, doesn’t mean that it’s intended for immediate launch if ever as such a deal cannot come from Sony alone and Verizon must play ball as well. While not highly common, it’s not unheard of deals like this falling through. Sony recently announced the Xperia Z2 would arrive in summer for the US in an unlocked model that will be available through Sony’s online store.

Do you think this is an accidental leak and that Sony is bringing the Xperia Z2 to Verizon or are we looking too much into this? Do the prospects of proper carrier support still seem slim for Sony’s mobile division in the US?
