An elegantly-designed Xperia device seems to be coming as a successor to 2013s Xperia ZL. The updated model sports a 5-inch 1080p screen with 3GB of RAM, a 20.7MP powered by a 3000 mAh battery. It’s seen in white, black, and cyan. It may not be a new flagship, but it still packs some meaty specs nonetheless.
This model is not expected to be released internationally, but instead in “select markets”. The original ZL was released in India, and likely the updated ZL2 will follow suit. No release date is known yet but a summer launch seems likely.

This device has appeared recently as an updated model of the Xperia ZL which debuted in March 2013. As successors go, it’s expected to be named simply the Xperia ZL2. The original ZL was not an international variant and was released in select markets only. We’ll compare the ZL and ZL2 further below.
As it’s an updated model, we won’t see a spectacular jump in Sony innovation, but there may be small updates here and there to look out for that tell us where the Xperia line is going next. For example, notice that the bezel is smaller above and below the device. Many smartphone users complain of large bezels on Sony devices. Counting as just one person, I like them. Having owned the Motorola RAZRi, the ‘edge-to-edge’ smartphone was a nightmare for single-handed use. Sony smartphones deliberately centre the screen to facilitate the arc of the thumb for scrolling exactly as Apple always has. Much of the OmniBalance design language that Sony uses is believed to be aesthetic, but they mention that it covers usability too.
