At the beginning of May, PlayStation 4 firmware update 1.70 prepared systems for the ability to pre-load games that have been digitally pre-ordered to unlock at midnight of release, much like Steam and other PC clients currently allow. The first title that was supposed to have that capability was Ubisoft’s Watch_Dogs, but the May 27 release didn’t ship with that feature. Today on the PlayStation Blog, we learned what upcoming titles will be receiving that treatment – and the first one isn’t too far away.
Sony Entertainment Network’s Digital Distribution Manager Chieh Chen revealed that Activision’s Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark will be the first title that PlayStation users can automatically pre-load to your system after pre-ordering over PSN. Transformers will be available next week, on June 24 in North American territories, for $59.99. Chen also revealed that any title pre-ordered on PSN after May 20, 2014 will be eligible for pre-loading once it’s set to release.
Among the titles currently available for pre-order and pre-loading are the following:
- Battlefield: Hardline (Oct. 21, 2014; standard and Deluxe Edition)
- Bloodborne (2015)
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Nov. 4, 2014)
- Destiny (Sep. 9, 2014)
- Dragon Age: Inquisition (Oct. 7, 2014; standard and Deluxe Edition)
- Far Cry 4 (Nov. 18, 2014)
- inFAMOUS First Light (Summer 2014)
- Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare (Aug. 19, 2014)
- LittleBigPlanet 3 (Holiday 2014)
- Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (Oct. 7, 2014)
- The Order: 1886 (Feb. 20, 2015)
- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2015)
If you haven’t yet made the leap to the new generation of hardware, fear not: PlayStation 3 will also be adding pre-loading to its list of features as well. Both systems will feature a handy countdown timer for pre-ordered games to let you know how long it will be until you’ll be able to start gaming.
