‘Destiny’ to Not Run at 60fps Because of Xbox One?

While there is a lot we now know about Destiny (like how awesome the game plays, even at an Alpha build), there is still a lot of information that’s yet to be revealed about the game. Some have to do with the actual gameplay, storyline, and world while others are more on the techno-babble side. One such piece of information is the frames-per-second that Destiny will offer. In the last year, more and more games having running at 60fps on the PS4 while their counterparts on the Xbox One have performed at a more modest 30fps.

Destiny may be one such game that bucks the trend and runs 1080p/30fps on all platforms and it may not be because the PS4 can’t handle it. After the jump, the explanation from Bungie.

From Bungie’s Jason Sussman:

It’s a lot of different things…I could get really technical, but I’d bore you to death. A lot has to do with performance. We’re cross-platform, so we had to be very delicate with all four consoles, making sure they have the same experience, that it looks as good as it possibly can on all these consoles. A lot goes into that, from geometry to textures to post effects to particles to how many players you get on the screen. We’re always balancing that out to make sure everyone gets the same experience.

While there is the chance that I’m reading too much into this, from what I gather from Jason’s response, it’s that they wanted the game to run equal on all platforms in order to offer the same experience. This means that Destiny will run at 30fps but that likely means that other platforms (PS4) were able to offer more and again, Bungie want the look and feel to be the same. While fps isn’t everything, it’s unfortunate that PS4 owners won’t be able to get more out of the game due to other platforms holding the quality back.

None of this is to say that Destiny looks bad or feels sluggish. During my quick time with Destiny, I completely and utterly fell in love with the game and cannot wait for its September arrival. Still, I wouldn’t mind if Destiny ran smoother on my PS4 than somebody else’s Xbox One.

Do you think we’re reading too much into statements from Jason?
