Many First Party Games in Development for PlayStation Vita

Earlier this week, we ran an article about the reasons behind the lack of PS Vita support by EA. While EA sometimes doesn’t have the best reputation in the industry, their arsenal of games cannot be denied and their lack of support on Vita is truly a major hurdle for the portable console. With little time spent on the Vita at E3, many began to wonder if Sony shared a similar sentiment about their powerful portable. When Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida was interviewed in Spain last week, he was quoted saying

I would say, yes, that’s correct

When asked if there would be fewer first party titles on the Vita. Now the fan favored and outspoken Yoshida has gone on record to clarify his statement about first party games.

His response:

The question I was asked was, ‘going forward, [will] the number of first party will be smaller?’, and I said ‘yes, number of projects will be smaller.’ I never said ‘we won’t make any games on PS Vita’.

We’re continuing to make games on PS Vita… we just launched a game called Freedom Wars in Japan, it’s a big title dedicated to PS Vita, and it’s received very well in Japan – we’ll bring that to Europe and US as well. And we’re making that JRPG, a very, very beautiful JRPG called Oreshika as well. And games made in Europe – Murasaki Baby is a dedicated PS Vita title that got many awards at E3.

And we’re continuing to make cross-platform games like Helldivers or CounterSpy. Many, many games we have in development for PS Vita from first-party as well.

If we’re to take Shu at his word (and we have little reason not to), it seems like while there aren’t many AAA titles planned for Vita, like God of War or Uncharted, Sony still has lots of first party games in development that might be better suited for the console.

Does the PlayStation Vita need more AAA titles or smaller ones?
