Sony Xperia M2 Aqua (D2403) – A Water Resistant Variant?

Sony_Xperia_M2Revealed in early Spring, the Sony Xperia M2 (pictured above) is a mid-level Android smartphone from Sony that still packs a punch. As a recap, the 4.8-inch phone features a 1.2GHz Quad-core Snapdragon processor, with an 8-megapixel camera, LTE connectivity, and NFC for easy pairing with other accessories (preferably those from Sony right?). Now thanks to the powers of the internet, a group of users found a rogue XML address from Sony’s own site that points to a yet to be announced device, the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua D2403.

Beyond the unlisted directory, there isn’t a lot to go by but maybe the name says it all. The current Sony Xperia M2 D230 lacks any form of water resistant coding. As the Aqua name might suggest, Sony is likely looking to release an updated version or maybe another addition along side the current Xperia M2 that features a water resistant design. Sony’s higher end fleet of smartphones and tablets all currently enjoy this feature and it may be something that will help Sony’s mid-range of devices stand out from the crowded mid-range Android market.

In addition to the XML address (seen below) which can be seen below, the model number D2403 and D2406 can be found on page. This falls in line with the current Xperia M2 model number scheme which goes under D230. With not a huge jump in the series (i.e. D330), the modeling number would suggest a minor update to the line with no dramatic internal changes coming which falls in line with what the Xperia M2 Aqua would be.

It’s likely far too early for Sony to already be tweaking the internals of the device, especially since it’s for the mid-range market. However, any tweaks to the design and hardware functionality would merit and incremental numerical increase in its model number and going from D230 to D2403 and D2406 constitutes that.

As to what the differences between the D2403 and D2406 are remains a mystery though its likely different network differences with one model designed for a global release while the other might be carrier specific and headed to the US.
