Despite ‘TitanFall’ and Price Cut on Xbox One, PS4 Remains on Top

PS4_FireworksIn the last few months, Microsoft has done a lot to help improve sales of the Xbox One. Landing TitanFall as an exclusive was certainly a huge win for Microsoft and a $100 price cut by removing Kinect which took into affect at E3 certainly helped position the consoler as a better competitor to the PS4. In fact Microsoft has publicly stated that sales of the Xbox One had “more than doubled” versus May when each console sold for $499. Unfortunately for the folks at Redmond, none of this was enough to dethrone PS4 where the powerful console has stayed at the number one spot for 6 months in a row now.

While the June 2014 NDP is not up yet and we don’t have any specific numbers to go by, Sony seems confident that they were able to beat Microsoft again and tweeted out the above message to their followers. For their part, Microsoft has been quite on the matter and likely knows the statement to be true. Compared to June 2013, total revenue for the game industry was up 24% to $736.4 million. Hardware was also up a whopping 106% to $292.7 million thanks to next-gen console sales. NPD analyst Liam Callahan:

The 106% increase in hardware sales (vs. June 2013) was lifted entirely by console hardware sales, which were up by over 200 percent. The strong sales performance of console hardware helped to offset the declines seen in portable hardware.

Combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80 percent higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 – an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation.

On the other hand, software sales for the month were down 3% to $286.8 million despite recent releases like Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8. While each title has performed quite well with the former now having sold 8 million copies, each title has been out long enough to not make a huge dent on June sales versus 2013 where The Last of Us (PS3), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS), and Minecraft (Xbox 360) were released. Though a month too late, come July 29th, Naughty Dog will be releasing The Last of Us Remastered on PS4.

Does Sony have enough upcoming titles to continue to hold off Microsoft for the number one spot?
