MP3 and Video Players Coming This Holiday to PS4, DLNA Not Till 2015?

PS4 DLNA

PS4 firmware 1.75 has now officially been released and with it came Blu-ray 3D playback, a feature that the PS4 surprisingly didn’t have from launch day. While the PS3 over the years has been built as one of the best home theater machines with Blu-ray 3D playback, extensive media apps, and easy playback of MP3 and videos from home servers, the PS4 has lacked all of these features. Luckily Sony is aware that there’s a demand for such features. Unfortunately, they’re not coming just quite yet with some as far as 2015. Lets talk specifics.

According to famed Redditor ‘IWorkForSony’ who is a verified Sony employee, we could be getting MP3 and video players by the 2014 holiday season while DLNA won’t arrive till 2015.

I’d say early 2015 for DLNA. MP3 and Video Players by the Holiday season (MP3 maybe sooner).

Unfortunately, that means that the PS4 still won’t be a suitable media machine for many till sometime in 2015 as such dates can easily slip. What’s more confusing is why there is such a lag for these to arrive on the PS4. Mp3 and DLNA are widely adopted formats that even the most basic of media streaming players poses. One of the biggest draws of the PS4 has been its uncompromising power and easy to understand PC like architecture that’s made it a breeze for developers to code for. The same then surely translates for additional functionalities like DLNA support and other missing features.

To make matters more frustrating, it’s not as if Sony has been showering the PS4 with added functionality in ways we didn’t expect since launch to say the internal team is busy with other things. I’m not going to pretend I know about developing for the PS4 but it seems bizarre that Sony wouldn’t push harder for these features to arrive on the PS4 as soon as possible to help transition those on the fence and help push them away from the PS3 to the PS4.

Are you surprised that it’s taking so long for DLNA and other features to come to the PS4?
