Without much warning or leaks, Sony has announced a new Action Cam (HDR-AS20) to join the company’s growing line of mountable cameras. The Action Cam AS20 provides many features of its predecessors like 170-degree wide-angle views, SteadyShot image stabilization, Zeiss Tessar lens, and Wi-Fi. The latter feature allows you to connect to Sony’s own Live-View (Remote RM-LVR1), which can be purchased separately, or to the free iOS/Android app. So what’s changed? Let’s talk details.
What makes the Sony Action Cam (HDR-AS20) stand out from previous models is the new 16.8-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor that can record in 1080/60p, 1080/30p and 720/30p footage. The Action Cam even allows for stills at 11.9-megapixels while filming. Patrick Huang, director of the Action Cam business at Sony Electronics:
With its slim, low-profile design, our Action Cam line goes wherever you go… from surfing trips to skate parks. With three impressive models now in market, including the AS100V, AS30V and new AS20 cameras, we’re ensuring that all types of POV shooters can capture their adventures with legendary Sony quality.
Other features identical to previous models include a stereo microphone, USB, HDMI, and a microphone jack. Another neat feature of the AS20 is its ability to automatically invert the image if it’s being shot upside down. Battery life has also been improved with 130 minutes of recording on Wi-Fi which can be extended to 150 minutes with Wi-Fi turned off.
The Sony Action Cam (HDR-AS20) will launch sometime in August for about $200. In late June, Sony updated the Action Cam (HDR-AS100V) with live streaming.
