In 2011, Sony initiated strategy for PlayStation Mobile, which would have the brand expand beyond core Sony consoles and arrive on Android devices. The move was part of a strategy that allowed Android users to experience PlayStation titles in hopes of bringing them to the PS3 and PS Vita. Unfortunately, the initiative never gained much traction. Hardware partners were limited and software releases were scant with mainly original PlayStation titles. Sony would also use the platform to allow smaller indie publishers to release titles on which would also be compatible on the PS Vita, but the incentive was low for developers as opposed to simply making their game for iOS and Android.
Fortunately, Sony is finally ending PlayStation Mobile development and with it, freeing up resources for the PS Vita.
Though the strategy in writing was bold and sound, Sony for its part has never been a master of software, nor have they been good at partnering with other companies. Despite the best of intentions, for Sony whose resources are scattered and few, it meant investing in a platform that clearly wasn’t going anywhere. That’s why starting with Android 4.2.2 and higher, Sony will no longer support PlayStation Mobile. Store access and re-downloads of previous games on 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 will depend on each manufacturer who took part in the program.
As of Android L, the program will be completely unaccessible. So what about those developers who have supported PlayStation Mobile? Sony has announced that it will help them transition their game developments and focus towards the PlayStation Vita and the upcoming PlayStation TV. In a time when Sony Electronics is clearly struggling to compete with rivals like Apple and Samsung, PlayStation has been a bright spot for the company. By ending development on an unpopular initiative, this gives Sony more employees and resources to put behind the extremely popular PS4 and struggling but well-liked PS Vita. With PlayStation Now, the streaming gaming service from Sony officially launching as a beta on PS4 with plans to expand to smartphones and tablets, the need for a dedicated service like PlayStation Mobile is further reduced.
The mark of good leadership and a company is not announcing more products and initiatives, but knowing when not to release a product and when it’s time to pull the plug on something. Hopefully Sony can apply this mentality to their electronics division as well.
