Taking a shot across the bow of GoPro, Sony has announced the Action Cam Mini. Taking everything you’ve known about their mountable MP4 cameras, the Sony Action Cam Mini packs all that in a smaller housing that’s two-thirds the size of previous models. To sweeten the pot further, the Action Cam Mini will be compatible with all previous accessories. After the jump, we have more details.
Patrick Huang, director of the camcorder business at Sony Electronics:
Sony continues to bring strong innovation to the POV camera market, delivering a professional quality video experience in a streamlined, compact design. The new Action Cam Mini takes this concept to a new level, opening up an unlimited range of creative possibilities for adventure junkies, action sports enthusiasts and more.
As we mentioned, the Sony Action Cam Mini is approximately 30% smaller than its predecessor. Engadget was able to get some hands on time with the Action Cam Mini and released the photo on the right, comparing the Action Cam and Action Cam Mini. However, don’t let the Mini’s size fool you – it offers some dazzling specs for its small form factor:
- 11.9-megapixel Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
- 170-degree Ultra-wide-angle Lens
- Stereo Microphone
- 1080p Recording (60fps)
- 720p Recording (120fps)
- 50 Mbps XAVC S codec (when recording in 1080p)
- NFC
The Action Cam Mini now comes in a splash proof design which means for general use like biking and skateboarding, a case won’t be required. Those looking to get more adventurous can place the Action Cam Mini in the provided case that makes it dust-, sand- and waterproof up to five meters. Alongside the Mini, Sony is also offering a new Live View Remote (RM-LVR2V) which allows you to control up to five cameras, and adjust image-quality adjustments, flip the screen, timecode, and shooting modes. The new Live View Remote also logs GPS data that’s transferred to the camera.
The Sony HDR-AZ1 Action Cam Mini will be available on October 19th for $250 or $350 kit model (HDR-AZ1VR) which includes the Mini and the Live View Remote.
