‘Destiny’ Sets Early PS4 Sales Records

If you haven’t been paying attention, Bungie’s first post-Halo game, Destiny, is kind of a big deal. Aside from being the only way to pick up the brand-new Glacier White PS4 if you’re in the US, Destiny has been one of the most-hyped games of the current generation. Sony in particular has banked heavily on the first-person shooter/RPG’s success, going so far as to consider it akin to a first-party release. A week into launch, Destiny has received okay reviews around the web, but what really matters is sales — and those figures have Activision, Bungie, and Sony very happy.

In a press release this morning, Activision announced that in it’s first week Destiny has sold through copies to the tune of $325 million dollars worldwide over all platforms. Activision CEO Eric Hirschberg was quoted in the release saying that “Destiny fans played more than 100 million hours of the game in the first week. That’s on par with the engagement levels of our most popular Call of Duty games, which obviously is an industry leader.”

While there are no concrete numbers for any SKU of the game, Sony’s Adam Boyes revealed over on the official PlayStation Blog that Destiny set a record as the largest software launch in the young history of the PlayStation 4. In addition, Boyes also announced that one-week sales of PS4 consoles were the best since Christmas 2013. Again, while we have no specific numbers, it’s clear that Destiny sold in large enough quantities to beat out initial sales of major returning franchises like Killzone: Shadow Fall, last-gen re-releases such as The Last of Us Remastered, and brand-new IP including Watch Dogs.

The PS4 has already sold more than 10 million units worldwide as of August, and with only a few genuine first-party releases coming this fall in the form of DriveClubSingStar, and LittleBigPlanet 3, having a console-moving third-party game is huge for Sony and the PlayStation brand. Keep checking SonyRumors to find out whether the PS4 can maintain it’s lead in the NPD charts for a ninth consecutive month, and for all the latest PlayStation news.
