In just a few hours, we’ll get to know Sony’s 2015 plans for its television lineup. While it’s all but expected for the company to update their 4K televisions, Android TV is something less talked about. In the years passed, Sony bet heavily on Google TV and released a full lineup of televisions that used the OS from Google. With the platform being a complete dud, Sony and other partners of Google TV were badly burned by the experience.
With a new name, Android TV, it’s looking like Sony will jump back into a strategic alliance once again with a slew of TVs that will contain the new OS. Details after the jump.
It’s expected that when Sony reveals their 2015 television lineup, that Android TV will play a big part. Rumors point to Sony Android TVs starting from about $700 for a 43-inch HD model with higher end models going for $3,999. If that price seems rather high, that would be because it’s expected that Sony will also bring Android TV to its 4K televisions as well. What’s unclear is if the entire lineup of 4K televisions get the Android TV treatment, which doesn’t seem likely if the price range is capped at $4k, or if Sony will split its lineups. The latter is likely the case, though I’m not sure if breaking down their product line with more models is the answer.
Alongside Android TV, Sony’s 2015 televisions will also offer PlayStation Now, allowing you to stream/rent PlayStation games without the need of a console. If that wasn’t enough, rumors also point to Remote Play which would give you the ability to stream PS4 games from your console to your TV and further extend your PS4’s reach in the house without the need of purchasing another console or a PlayStation TV.
