It still remains unclear if Sony plans to unveil any new smartphones at MWC 2015, let alone their rumored and expected Xperia Z4 flagship. Whether Sony ends up showing off their phones at MWC or at a later date during a private press event (a la Apple style), today’s leaks from the Indonesian Postel Regulatory site, which in the past has been dead on accurate with their revealed model numbers, should bring a smile to Sony fans. While Sony fans have had their doubts about Sony Mobile’s future and their product line in 2015, the revealed three models indicate that there are still new units in the pipe line from Sony in what appears to be a three tiered strategy.
Details after the jump.
The three revealed model numbers from Indonesian Postel Regulatory (think FCC for Indonesia) are:
- Sony – E6533
- Sony – E5333
- Sony – E2353
With each passing year, Sony raises the lettering scheme of their model numbers. Seeing how the Xperia Z2 carried the D65XX model number, it’s likely a very safe bet to assume that the E6533 will be the Sony Xperia Z4, this year’s flagship smartphone. Sony did also release the Xperia Z3 (D66XX) in 2014 but with the company going towards a one hero device per year, that tick in a higher model number will be unique to 2014 and the Xperia Z5 in 2016 will likely F65XX.
In 2014, the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra, a mid-range device, despite its ‘phablet’ status carried the D53XX model number. While it’s unclear if the E5333 will be a phablet or not, it will sit in Sony’s mid-range offering. Finally the E2353 appears to be Sony’s low-end Android smartphone. Though not baring the exact same model number, Sony offered the Xperia M2 (D23XX) in 2014. With no other solid information to go by, it’s looking less and less likely that we’ll see the Xperia Z4 at MWC 2015. Then again, maybe Sony is just a lot better this year at containing the leaks.
For the record, the phone pictured above is the Sony Xperia T3.
