The problem with perception is that sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to shake. Years after the Vita release, many still see the powerful handheld as expensive, lacking in software, or both. The reality couldn’t be further from the stigma that surrounds the portable console. As it stands, you can purchase the PS Vita with an 8GB memory card and Borderlands 2 for $199. When it comes to title selection, we might not be getting blockbuster title after blockbuster title but maybe it’s for the better. It in fact does the Vita and gamers a disservice when games that were never designed to be portable are simply ported to the Vita in order to check off an item from a devs’ to do list.
Instead, what we see on the Vita now is a rise of indie games designed specifically for the console. From adventure games to more experimental games, the Vita likely has a game that’s just right for you. Shahid Ahmad, Senior Business Development Manager at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe seems to agree. His comments after the jump.
I’m not sure if you’d call Vita a massive success, but it’s certainly been doing good numbers, it’s been steady, and software is coming practically by the day. The catalogue is really healthy now. Software is no longer a problem on Vita, I would say. There are still people saying ‘I want this on Vita’. You can’t have everything; there are commercial realities. But we are seeing more and more, and I don’t think people are going to run out of Vita games anytime soon.
According to Ahmad, there is “as much interest from developers on Vita as we are on PS4.” Just last year, there were over 50 titles released on the Vita and he believes 2015 to be no different and in fact, sees the number rising. So while you might not see the next adventures of Nathan Drake on the Vita, there is no shortage of games hitting the console on a weekly basis including titles like Grim Fandango Remastered, Resogun, Fat Princess: Piece of Cake, Fieldrunners 2, CRIMINAL GIRLS: Invite Only, and Atelier Ayesha Plus ~The Alchemist of Dusk.
