And then there were 55. Sadly, last week we reported on a massive layoff that would be hitting Evolution Studios, the developers behind DriveClub. We noted then that, while the game was met with a rocky launch, since that time, it’s turned into arguably one of the best arcade racers out there. Unfortunately that hasn’t been enough to save the studio from cuts and that number has revealed itself. As of March 20th, nearly half the developers at Evolution Studios would soon be without a job.
More details after the jump, including some encouraging news for fans of DriveClub and MotorStorm.
With 55 employees being let go, this represents a work force reduction of nearly half at the PlayStation exclusive studio. Going forward, the studio will focus on more downloadable content for DriveClub and the PS Plus Edition. According to Sony, they will be
looking to relocate team members throughout the studios, but unfortunately some redundancies will be necessary and in those cases we will assist staff in any way we can.
Some have speculated that this could be a means to evolution wind down the studio but others have pointed a more hopeful scenario.
The staff they kept are the best at what they do. If you wanted a fresh start for Evo, those are the people to do it.
Here is hoping that those affected by the layoff are able to find work and that eventually, we can see a DriveClub 2 – as the series surely deserves a follow up.
Discuss:
Would you like to see Evolution Studios develop another DriveClub title or start a new franchise, maybe something more akin to MotorStorm?
