On the heels of their 2015 fleet of 4K televisions dropping, Sony is beefing up its 4K library with some new and exclusive content. Available as of April 10th, the PlayStation-produced show Powers will be available in 4K on Video Unlimited 4K, and can be accessed via the FMP-X10 4K Media Server. Powers adds to the growing list of over 300 pieces of native 4K content available exclusively for Sony television users, like Better Call Saul. Keep in mind that access to Sony’s Video Unlimited 4K requires the separately-purchased (though often given for free) FMP-X10 4K media server.
Luckily for those without one, more native 4K content is coming to Sony televisions via a new app which requires no servers and will feature films like Interstellar (pictured above). If you’re interested, more details await you after the jump.
Dubbed UltraFlix, this new app is now available on all 2014 Sony 4K televisions and will arrive on Sony’s 2015 fleet once they’re available in late Spring or early Summer. UltraFlix offers a huge library of 4K content, including up to
300 hours of stunning 4K travel and nature documentaries and a wide selection of action/thriller, comedy, drama and family movies as well as breath-taking extreme sports videos, concerts, TV shows and moving murals
For those unfamiliar, UltraFlix is positioning itself as the 4K Netflix though their business model differs greatly. As it stands, content is rented on a per-title basis, though they hope to change that in the future and offer subscription services. Content is priced as such. Movies are labeled “Silver,” “Gold,” and “Platinum,” with upconverted 1080p movies given a Silver rating, old film transfers labeled as Gold movies, and native 4K movies given a Platinum rating. As mentioned, movies can currently only be rented for a period of 48-hour.
Pricing for UltraFlix ranges from from $1.99 to $3.99 for “third-tier content,” $4.99 for a concert or IMAX documentary, and up to $9.99 for a studio film like Interstellar. In order to take advantage of native 4K content, a 25Mb internet connection is required.
