Confirmed: Morpheus to Arrive in First Half of 2016

Just yesterday, we told you about how Sony is working hard at ensuring that PS4 continues to not only be a profitable machine for them, but that it continues to stay ahead of its competitors, namely the Xbox One. One such way to achieve the latter is by reducing internal component costs which would make each unit sold more profitable and give Sony the flexibility it needs to do a price cut likely sometime this year.

The other party of that strategy seems to be Morpheus, their VR headset, and it’s arriving sooner than we all might have thought.

According to an internal document, Sony is looking to bring Morpheus to market in the first half of 2016. That means that whatever iteration of the VR headset Sony shows off this year at different cons like E3 and Tokyo Game Show will be a fairly mature and likely final build of Morpheus.

This also means that internally, Sony must be in advance stages with games which will be needed to fuel Morpheus sales. Just last month, Sony announced the opening of a first party studio in Europe that would exclusively work on Morpheus games. In addition to a robust library, pricing will also be a factor for Morpheus.

Currently, developers (who get lower prices on hardware) can get the Oculus Rift with lower specs for $200. One way that Sony can hope to make the purchase of Morpheus more attractive for newcomers to PlayStation is by lowering the price of PS4. Still, it will be interesting to see what support and pricing will be like.

Most manufacturers haven’t had much luck with attachment peripherals. Just ask Sony about PlayStation Move and Microsoft about Kinect on 360. In fact, Kinect has been so poorly received that Microsoft decided to unbundle it from Xbox One.
