Two New PS4 Models Outed by FCC; One Comes With a 1TB Drive

FCC_PS4_CUH_1215A_CUH_1215BThanks to our friends at the FCC which LOVE to reveal products before their announcements, we can report on and safely confirm the arrival of two new PlayStation 4 models. For those unfamiliar, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) must inspect any device in the United States which contains a wireless chip. In the case of the PS4, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi qualify it as such a device. According to their documentations, Sony has submitted CUH-1215A and CUH-1215B PS4 models with some big and small differences when compared against the current models.

Those details after the jump.

Likely to be revealed at E3, the new PS4 models are the CUH-1215A and CUH-1215B. Specifically, the CUH-1215A will contain a 500GB hard drive which is what the PS4 has had since launch and the CUH-1215B which will come with a 1TB hard drive. Another revelation is, when compared to the current PS4 model (CUH-1001A), the new units are .3kg and 2.5kg lighter. The difference in weight between the two models is likely due to the hard drive weight difference. Dimensions for the new PS4 appear to be the same which likely means Sony has only made internal tweaks.

Just last week, we reported how Sony was looking at ways to reduce component costs of PS4 which always leads to a price cut. Over time with all generations, the newer models get cheaper and more efficient to build as is evident with these new models which use 230 watts of power when compared to the current 250 watts and draw 2.3-0.95 amps versus 2.5-1.15 amps. While we don’t know much more about these new models, including their price tag, we likely won’t have to wait much longer. Sony will be holding their annual E3 press conference on Monday, June 15th.
