It’s hard to say at this point who leaks more Sony products: the FCC, which tends to let product specs leak, like the newly revealed PS4 models, or Sony, who routinely launches website leaks and apps with information pertaining to products they’ve yet to reveal. For today, it’s a bit of a double whammy as the FCC first revealed information about the Sony SmartBand 2 SWR12 in April. Not to be outdone, Sony accidentally released a SmartBand 2 companion app with screenshots of the device and the functionalities we can expect.
As expected, the Sony SmartBand 2 will once again offer the ability to track your movement in a waterproof design and set alarms. The SmartBand will also allow you to play, pause, and skip through your music. All of this can be done with nearly a tap, thanks to the built-in NFC which makes pairing the unit with your Android phone a breeze.
What makes this iteration different than its predecessor is the heart rate sensor. This sensor
measures your pulse at an even rate throughout the day
Once you’re active however, SmartBand 2 can track your
BPM (beats per minute) ‘right now’
under the Pulse tab which measures your heart rate at that given moment. According to Sony, the SmartBand 2 SWR12 is
an innovative life logging wrist band that tracks your body effort through pulse and HRV (heart rate variability), keeps track of your movements and your sleep.
Since this just a leak from the app, specifics like color options and pricing is still unknown. It’s also unclear how the battery life will be affected as functionality like a heart rate sensor tends to be a drain on battery. Theoretically, Sony could have compensated for this by being able to shrink down other components and offering a slightly larger battery which would help keep the device’s lightweight profile intact.
With a slip on the Google Play store, it’s likely only a matter of time before the Sony SmartBand 2 is officially announced.
