After what seemed like an endless amount of leaks, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has officially been revealed at IFA 2015. Once again, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai took to stage to reveal their latest flagship products and at the center of this new smartphone is a 5.5-inch 4K display with a 23-megapixel rear-camera that can shoot in 4K as well. Better yet, tapping into the Bravia engine, the Xperia Z5 Premium will upscale your previous HD content to near 4K quality, ensuring a constant quality across all of your media.

With the Xperia Z5 Premium, Sony is specifically targeted the premium market as the name suggests. This can be seen via the Xperia precision-etched marking on the side of the phone and the color options which include black, gold, and chrome. Long gone is the bulkier power button found in previous Xperia phones and instead is a sleek, surface smooth power button with an integrated fingerprint sensor. With frosted glass on the front and an all metal enclosure, Sony wants the Xperia Z5 Premium to feel in your hands as much as the name suggests. Eiji Shintani, Chief art director
Our products should be a naturally integrated part of people’s lives, so we’ve listened carefully to consumers when making our design decisions. They’re looking for less, but better.
To push that message further, you’ll find Hi-Res Audio support and digital noise canceling built in to ensure you get the best out of your music. With a 4K display and 4K video, there is little of Sony’s other businesses that the Xperia Z5 Premium isn’t tapping into. Though less flashy in name, perhaps the most important component of the Xperia Z5 Premium will be its cameras. For your selfie needs, Sony is providing a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with 25mm wide-angle lens that will mean less squeezing in when you and you’re friends all want in on the picture.
However, the real star of the show is the23-megapixel (1/2.3” Exmor RS) front-facing camera. According to Sony, their latest camera incorporates the best of their award-winning G Lenses with intelligent image processing that will allow you to capture your subject in less than a second. Specifically, using a Hybrid Autofocus system, the camera can focus anywhere on screen in just 0.03 seconds. With Touch Capture and wide AF coverage, you’ll be able to touch anywhere on the screen and the camera will automatically focus and immediately takes the shot.
Sony is also incorporating something they call Clear Image Zoom which promises to provide 5x zoom with no image quality loss, thanks to their advanced algorithms. The Xperia Z5 Premium will also be able to take great photos in low light using Sony’s Exmor RS CMOS sensor which provides high sensitivity and low noise. Like previous models, you’ll still find a dedicated camera button with the volume buttons acting as your zoom in/out.
The Xperia Z5 Premium will be available in both Single SIM and Dual SIM variants when it launches in November. No price point or carrier partners have been announced yet.
