There is no doubt that PlayStation, thanks to the success of PS4, continues to do well and even outperform most analyst expectations. Due to the ever increasing momentum which is greatly helping Sony’s bottom line while other divisions like Mobile continue to struggle, Sony not so surprisingly wants to leverage the division in other to scale further. In short, Sony wants to capitalize on the reach of PS4 and the money it’s bringing in and further invest in the gaming division.

PS4 is already well on its way towards 30 million units sold and will likely achieve it even faster than PS2. When speaking to Japanese investors and analysts, Chief Financial Officer Kcnichiro Yoshida had this to say about PlayStation
The game division can continue to seek scale by capitalizing on the strong momentum of the PS4.
Part of this will including investing more into their online services by
turning the PlayStation Network into a truly comprehensive global entertainment platform.
It’s fairly clear that the future of PlayStation isn’t tied to dedicated consoles and instead, as a digital service. Think the reach Sony could achieve if every TV sold or connected box like Apple TV like Netflix, also came with a PlayStation app which opened up a world of titles to consumers. We might not be there now and I’m certain we’ll have a PS5 but a PS6 or 7? That’s far less certain. Keep in mind that Sony is already well towards its way of making a dedicated PlayStation console a relic of the past with PlayStation Now on Sony and Samsung televisions.
Now where Sony takes PSN is the real question. Is games only the future of PSN or will Sony once again try to dabble in videos and music?
