Sony a7S II Has a ‘Black Spot’ Problem

Do not attempt to adjust your computer/mobile device screen. The above photo was taken directly on the Sony a7S II, the flagship full-frame mirrorless camera and has not been accidentally Photochopped in any way. The black spot you see comes courtesy of the algorithm on the camera which likes to black out the sun.

Yea, let’s talk some more after the jump.

Priced at $2,999.99 for the body, the a7s II offers some killer features like

  • 12.2MP Full-Frame Exmor CMOS Sensor
  • BIONZ X Image Processor
  • Internal UHD 4K (30fps) & 1080p (120fps) Recording
  • S-Log3 Gamma and Display Assist Function
  • 5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization
  • 0.5″ 2.36m-Dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF
  • 3.0″ 1,228,800-Dot Tilting LCD Monitor
  • Up to 5 fps Shooting and ISO 409600
  • Fast Intelligent AF, 169 AF Points
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC

Of course none of that means anything if you can’t shoot properly outdoors. Like all issues of this kind, not everyone is running across it though enough people are as its evident from a few different reviews. While a tad embarrassing, the issue can likely be fixed via a firmware update and is not indicative of a defect. Other cameras have known to have similar issues in the past like those produced by Blackmagic and were subsequently fixed by firmware updates.

If anything, this is one of those cases that the more of a stink we all raise from it, the sooner the issue will get addressed. Till then, if you own the Alpha a7S II, I say keep pumping out those amazing pictures but you may want to avoid the outdoors?
