There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it?
That’s how the teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens begins. Without a shadow of a doubt, Star Wars is going to break all kinds of records when it arrives in theaters in less than a month. Having just spent last night at Disneyland and partaken in the soft launch of Season of the Force the weekend prior which is now in full effect, it’s certain that whomever or whatever sides with Star Wars this year is going to see a major spike and PlayStation is no different. The PS4 is already cleaning the clocks of Xbox One which sits between 15-17 million units sold compared to that of 30 million units.
With Star Wars Battlefront, Sony and EA have joined forces (had to) in creating exclusive themed bundles, digital downloads, and unique controllers like the Darth Vader Dualshock 4. As long as Sony can put compelling PlayStation content that’s tied to Star Wars with a bit of press, all they need to do is sit back and ride the hype. With Star Wars Battlefront having been out for less than two weeks, Sony is already reaping in the rewards and it’s likely only going to increase.
Pulling in data from DICE servers which also looked at peak traffic within a 24 hour period, the numbers of PS4 users playing Star Wars Battlefront was more than the Xbox One and PC combined.
- PC – 45,433
- 24hr peak – 49,871
- Xbox One – 85,608
- 24hr peak – 110,817
- PS4 – 178,374
- 24hr peak – 187,286
Two years ago, nobody could have imagined that Sony would be this far ahead of Microsoft and certainly not with 3rd party games and developers which have traditionally favored the Xbox due to its simpler nature to develop for. With this generation, Sony is not only ahead of Microsoft, but perhaps playing in a completely different league. This number is perhaps more impressive when you consider that a majority of Sony’s first party studios like Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studios have yet to release their exclusive titles on PS4.
Expect Sony to have another stellar holiday as parents and shoppers will gobble up anything Star Wars related and PlayStation will have plenty to offer.
Discuss:
Do you think PS4 will outsell Xbox One this holiday season or will Microsoft be able to counter?
