Just in time for PlayStation Experience (which takes place next week) and Friday, the kickoff of the frenzy which is the holiday shopping season, Sony has announced a big one. Even though we more or less knew it was going to happen, PS4 sales have officially marched past 30 million units sold. Hell, to give credit where it’s due, Sony has actually sold 30.2 million units sold. From Sony
PS4 continues to demonstrate the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history
The chart above shows Sony’s current market share with estimated Xbox One sales numbers. I’ll explain that along with some official sales numbers from competitors after the jump.
As of today, official sales numbers of next-gen this gen consoles are as follows
- PS4 – 30.2 million
- Wii U – 10.73 million
- Xbox One – 10 million
If the numbers for Xbox seem low, that’s because unlike Nintendo which reported sales number most recently on September 30th, Microsoft has not given an update in over a year which usually is an indicator that things are going pretty abysmal. The reality is that Xbox One sales likely hover around 15 million units which is what I used for the chart above. Otherwise, Sony would own even more of the market. If there was any doubt that Sony is taking its competitors to town, look no further that Star Wars Battlefront which has more PS4 players than Xbox One and PC combined.
Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc
We are sincerely grateful that gamers across the globe have continued to choose PS4 as the best place to play since launch two years ago. We are committed to bringing engaging games and entertainment services to users worldwide. Thanks to the support of our partners, PS4 continues to be the premier platform for game and interactive entertainment innovation
Translation – we’re kicking ass and hope you stick along for the ride because in 2016, our first party developers are going to unload a plethora of games on you. Ultimately what this means for gamers is that unless Microsoft can park a truck full of cash at every developer like they did with Square Enix to get Tomb Raider early, that developers will first and foremost consider PS4 when it comes to choosing their lead platform. This means more games built from the ground up for PlayStation.
