Just a week ago, I ran a fun poll to see what studio you’d like Hideo Kojima to join once he had officially parted with Konami. While Naughty Dog was a contender with nearly 22% of the votes, a great number of you (36%) wanted to see the legendary developer create his own studios. Now it looks like your wish might be coming true. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei Shinbun, Kojima has finally parted (aka his contract now allows him to fully walk away) from Konami and is looking to set up his own studio.
Best yet, it’s looking like he may pursue a PlayStation exclusive game. More after the jump.
If the rumors pan out (and until there is such an announcement, I’d take this with a grain of salt), it will be Kojima and some senior members of his former team at Konami. No surprise that any previous title he’s worked on like Metal Gear and Enders Zone will remain under Konami and that whatever game he’ll be developing next will be an original IP.
The article also mentions that they fully expect Kojima to work on games for consoles such as the PS4. It’s hard to tell if this means exclusive or if they simply used PS4 to represent consoles in order to point out that he’s not pursuing a mobile studio for games on platforms such as iOS. Still, Kojima has always been a staunch supporter of PlayStation and PS4 continues to pace well ahead of Xbox One worldwide. In Japan, things are even worse for Xbox One with less than 70k units having been moved since launch.
Previously Kojima had vowed to “keep creating” games so this news shouldn’t be all that surprising. Instead what will be more interesting is to see what the famous developer does next. All this aside, I’d be fascinated to hear about just what the hell took place inside of Konami that they decided to treat their star player so poorly and so publicly. There’s lots of speculation that Konami is looking to exit the game space but that still doesn’t explain all the bridge burning.
Discuss:
Would you like to see Kojima develop games exclusively for PS4 or for all modern consoles?
