Depending on your cinema destination of choice, you may have seen an epic new trailer for Uncharted 4 in front of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Composed completely in CG, the new trailer does little to reveal anything new from the game and instead focuses on a single moment in time. Despite the scene in question only lasting a mere few seconds, Naughty Dog is beautifully able to convey a pretty good idea of what the Uncharted franchise is about and who Nathan Drake is, or isn’t.
The new Uncharted 4 trailer is after the jump.
I’m often hyper critical of advertisement, especially that from Sony. This 30 second spot bucks that trend and reveals its beauty with each consecutive rewatch. We might all think of Drake as a treasure hunter, focused on getting his hand on every mysterious piece he can which is exactly how the trailer starts. But as the narration and scene continue, we see that there is more to Drake and it’s family that he’s after, not treasure, which is the root of Uncharted.
What makes Uncharted work beyond the fun gameplay and exquisite graphics is a story line that’s mixed with mystery and treasure, much like Indiana Jones which immediately makes the series fun with lots of exotic locations to explore. Like Indy, the compelling nature of Nathan Drake is that he’s not some stone cold ‘badass’ and that what he values and cherishes is his friends like Sully and now his brother Sam. Despite the grand nature of the series, Uncharted is exceptionally rooted in real emotions and character traits which the trailer literally revolves around. Well done Naughty Dog..
