The highlight from the Sony CES 2016 press conference was their latest 4K HDR X930D. Available in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch (X940D) variants, the newest TV from Sony is the only model being shown on the floor and talked about. While Kaz Hirai did hint that other models could arrive in 2016, clearly Sony wants to focus and only talk about the X930D which they call their flagship unit.
However, on Sony’s own press portal, there is information about another 4K HDR TV, the XBR-X850D. When I asked about it on the show floor, nobody knew anything about the model and after talking with a few Sony reps, curiously their press portal is down. Not to worry though since I have all the revealed information after the jump.
- HDR compatibility to receive and process the new video standard signal with higher brightness, higher contrast and more vibrant colors.
- Brilliant, expanded color with TRILUMINOS Display, further enhanced for color accuracy.
- 4K X-Reality PRO brings stunning detail using a unique algorithm from a reality creation database for TV broadcasting, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, Internet video and digital still photos.
- 4K Processor X1 to improve color accuracy, contrast and clarity of HD, 4K and 4K HDR video.
- Supports Google’s Android TV operating system, making it easy to stream video, functions as a gaming device and providing enhanced features. Google Cast will provide users with greater connectivity than ever before by enabling them to cast content from mobile devices.
- Voice Search and Voice Command available through a remote equipped with a microphone. With access to Google Play, consumers can enjoy what they like to do on a smartphone or tablet, from their television.
- Sony’s exclusive Content Bar allows customers to access content quickly and intuitively without disturbing while watching TV by enhancing and shortening content direct access.
I’m still not sure what to make of this model. For the most part, it makes sense that Sony would update their X850 series and bring native 4K HDR support. It’s just a bit curious that nobody at CES wants to talk about this model though that’s perhaps because they want the focus to be on their flagship series.
Update:
I’ve since updated the article title to reflect that the X850D was in fact announced at CES 2016 and not leaked. I was finally able to talk with a Sony rep about the new TV and find a single one (the only one) on the show floor. Also a few days after the show and Sony’s press portal is still down. Apparently server issues are to blame for it.
Discuss:
Are you interested in the X850D?
