The only device in the Xperia X family to have IP65/IP68 certification is the Xperia X Performance which left many who lusted for the Xperia X a little burned. After all, the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium both had water- and dust-proofing so the removal of these features from the Xperia X felt odd at best. However like Apple and the iPhone 6s which is waterproof despite it being advertised otherwise, the Xperia X might be as well.
I wouldn’t take this as sign that the Xperia X is waterproof, nor would I test this with the Xperia X if it’s your only device. When Chris Barraclough reviewed the Xperia X for recombu, he had written:
I didn’t miss the lack of water resistance, as the Xperia X is still perfectly capable of functioning in the pissing rain (as I discovered just yesterday; cheers, Britain). So, barring a terrible drunken toilet dunking incident, chances are most people won’t even care about the change
If the Xperia X is actually waterproof, what Sony gains is skipping the certification process required to prove it and the warranty headaches that go along with having a device that claims as such – after all, even waterproofed devices can fail. By going at it this way, Sony now has the ability to delight users who found themselves in a wet situation with a phone that still works. And if you’re wondering why Sony claimed the feature on the Xperia X Performance, it’s that they needed a way to officially further differentiate it from the Xperia X. Also seeing how the Performance variant will most certainly ship in much lower volume, the risk factor involved with warranty claims is likely dramatically lower.

If the Xperia X is secretly waterproof, will you feel better about the phone?
