Previously dubbed PS4 4K, PS4.5, and codenamed PS4 Neo, Sony officially took the wraps off of their next vision – PS4 Pro. Andrew House, President and Global CEO:
With PlayStation 4 Pro our goal is to deliver innovation in the form of cutting-edge visuals and graphics while in the midst of the PS4’s lifecycle.
And they are doing exactly that. When PS4 launches, you can expect a far more powerful console. How powerful, you ask? About 125% more powerful than the PS4. In other words, it’s 2.25 times more powerful than what’s currently on the market, including the newly released Xbox One S.
According to Andrew, PS4 Pro:
enhances PS4 games by supporting the latest in imaging technology through 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as smoother frame rates. Games that already look extraordinary on PS4 will look richer and more detailed, thanks to the more powerful GPU and faster CPU at the heart of PS4 Pro.
With more pixels, 4K’s higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined. HDR enables visuals to look much closer to the way your eyes see the real world.
But even if you don’t own a 4K TV, there is still something in it for you.
All games will run in 1080p resolution, and some will even run in a higher or more stable framerate.
That means developers can design games that either give something extra to 4K TV owners like enhanced visuals or even more improved framerate for those with an HDTV. Perhaps the best part of this is that you don’t have wait a year or so either to see improvements come to upcoming games as a lot of developers are going back and patching previously released titles like Uncharted 4. As for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Days Gone, they’ll all support PS4 Pro with enhancements for 4K and HDTV owners from day one.
Alongside better visuals for 4K TV owners, PS4 Pro will also offer 4K apps like Netflix and YouTube which will allow you to watch 4K and 4K HDR content like House of Cards, Luke Cage, and Narcos to name a few.
And those interested in PS VR will also be happy to know that PS4 Pro will be able to provide games with better visuals and improved framerate, all from day one.
The pitch from Sony is simple: if you own a 4K TV, the advantages of PS4 Pro will be obvious and for the rest, there is still a lot to be enjoyed from PS4 Pro which will launch on November 10th for $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD).
