In just a little over a weeks time, PlayStation VR, potentially one of the most ambitious projects from Sony is set to launch. Unlike the a slim model PlayStation or even the PS4 Pro which is something they’ve never done before, PS VR has the ability to change the medium. Where before, Sony tried its hands at something like PS Move which despite being superior to the Wii’s technology failed to catch on because of how late it arrived, PS VR is ahead of the curve. Yes the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have already hit market but that only happened a few months ago and when PS VR does release, it will cost considerably less than it’s competitors.
Now, some developers like Flavio Parenti, CEO of Loading Human believe the new addition to the PlayStation lineup could become the standard for VR.
We expect PlayStation VR to be a market leader. We don’t know how big the market is or how big PSVR will be, but the sweet deal that Sony is giving to the players is amazing. For just half the price of the others you get everything. Developers will aim for PSVR standards, and then adapt games to PC if PSVR is the market leader.
And Parenti is right – sure there are more powerful VR experiences out there but seldom do more expensive things become the standard, otherwise, Ferrari would set the yardstick for automobiles and full-frame DSLR would be how we judge digital cameras. In this case, Sony has the opportunity to introduce the world to something completely new and build from it. If consumers react with enthusiasm, you can certainly expect future iterations of PS VR with more capabilities and who knows, perhaps one day, as a complete standalone device. In many ways, the smartphone revolution was no different in that what our devices could do 9-10 years ago were so limiting compared to what we have today but consumers responded and the rest is history.

Do you think PS VR has the ability to set the standard for VR?
