To say Sony’s had a mixed track record with OS updates would be a bit of understatement. Android Marshmallow, the now year-old release from Google, has yet to make it onto many devices so when Nougat was announced, Sony fans were more than skeptical on when, if ever, they’d get the update.
Now, back in September, Sony revealed their update strategy for Android 7.0 Nougat which had a majority of their fleet getting the update by year’s end, but I wouldn’t hold it against you if you rolled your eyes a bit. Luckily for those with a newer device, that timeframe seems to be holding true.
Czarry May Martin writes for HNGN:
True to earlier speculations, the latest Android OS update will be available first in the company’s newest X-series. Hence, Android 7.0 Nougat for Xperia XZ and Xperia X Performance will be the first ones to roll out. These devices will be upgraded from Marshmallow to Nougat before October 2016 ends.
The Android 7.0 Nougat for Xperia X and Xperia X Compact will roll out after a month, speculated to be around November 2016. And on December 2016, the Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium will receive the latest Android OS.
The one odd thing about the rollout if the timing holds true is a lack of Nougat for Xperia XA and Xperia XA Ultra. According to Martin, those two phones won’t receive Android 7.0 till March and I’m not quite sure why. Either way, we have just a week or so to determine if the above timeframe is accurate or not.
As for all other phones, no Nougat is expected, including the Z3.
